Writing & Editing Services

Writing teachers often talk about “writing as a process.” In other words, no one sits down and writes a perfect draft in one go. As I often tell my students, every writer makes mistakes; even professional, best-selling authors have editors!

If you are unsure of what kind of editing you need, contact me and we can have a quick discovery meeting to chat about your project. I’m also always happy to review a short sample of your work to determine the level of editing needed and give you an approximate quote for the project.

For any of the services listed, I am also happy to determine a per word rate if preferred once I have seen a sample of the writing.

Services

Copywriting

Starts at $45/hour

Copyediting is usually the first step in the revision and editing process. In this type of editing, we are looking for sentence-level issues (like usage, grammar, and mechanics errors) and paragraph-level issues (like tone, flow, consistency, wordiness, etc.). We are also reviewing the text for things that may need light research or fact-checking, like the formatting of a brand name or a date that seems incorrect. This type of editing often includes simple corrections as well as commentary with questions and suggestions.

Rewriting

Starts at $45/hour

We specialize in rewriting text that needs a helping hand when it comes to clarity. This may happen when the text is translated from another language or when a historical text needs help connecting with a modern audience’s language. We will work with you on the level of rewriting you prefer. This type of service helps smooth out the text so the original message is clear for the intended audience. Please reach out if you would like to see a sample of this work.

Journalism

----

Chelsea is a lifelong Marylander and specializes in covering local history and lore, as well as all the newest, hottest spots in town. Check out my local journalism for Bay Weekly and Visit Annapolis.

Proofreading

Starts at $35/hour

Proofreading is the final stage of editing. During proofreading, we use the fine-toothed comb to tease out any hidden typos, misspellings, spacing issues, formatting inconsistencies, and (for academic writing) checking citation formatting. It is a good idea for writers to have two different sets of eyes complete the copyediting and proofreading steps, so if you have already had your work copyedited and are just about ready to publish or post, this is the service for you. We specialize in APA and MLA formatting for research writing.

Writing

Custom quote available

Does this sound familiar? You know what you want to say, but you tend to clam up staring at the blank page. We would love to listen to your ideas about your project and then translate our casual conversation into engaging, fresh content for your site, blog, or publication.

Style Guides

Custom quote available

You know the old adage about teaching someone to fish rather than giving them a fish? With this service, we can create a customized style guide for your brand or company, so that your in-house team of writers and copyeditors can hit the ground running with this clear guidance on a consistent style. With this service, you will receive a user-friendly document that lists and explains each style guideline, with examples when appropriate. We can also offer add-ons to this service, like providing an online team training session that can be recorded to share with later hires, or assessment creation for potential hires.
